In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Lazy Learners.”
I would like to introduce this post by giving myself a solid tap on the back. I’m 26 years old, I work 2 jobs and I go to University part-time. In the past couple of months alone, I’ve accomplished a lot of things on my to-do list:
- Starting a blog (oh, hello!)
- Starting to paint and attempting to sell my art
- Being more physically active
So, to say I consider myself a “lazy learner” wouldn’t be fair, I’ve done a lot of reading, research and experimenting to get me where I am today.
To be brutally honest though, there are a whole list of things that I haven’t gotten around to learning, and I’m a bit ashamed of them:
- Learning how to drive
- Learning how to swim
- Learning a new language
- Taking a sewing lesson
- Taking a class in graphic design
In all cases I did some legwork to get myself going, such as watch YouTube videos, read my driver’s manual, use the Duolingo application on a daily basis, but I truly haven’t crossed any of these things off my list. Is it in part laziness? Probably. But, I think it’s more likely that in the grand scheme of things, none of these were my top priorities.
Unfortunately, I did waste a lot of time. The majority of my early twenties was spent being the laziest human on earth. A story for another day…
But in the past 2 to 3 years, I’ve grown as an individual, I’ve truly accomplished so much in such little time, and for that I am very proud of myself.
No one can do it all, it’s impossible. But progress is key.
Remember that not everyone learns the same way. If your first method didn’t work – don’t give up, try a different way.
I am really impressed at what you’ve accomplished. Learning to drive is not that important if you don’t have a car huh. I can’t afford a car but I use my drivers license as I.D. It comes in handy .

That’s the only thing my license is good for… It’s very expensive to get a true license let alone afford a car and insurance, maybe one day! Thank you 🙂

Truly impressed by what you’ve accomplished. Excellent.
If it makes you feel any better. I don’t know how to swim at all. I took swimming lessons back in my high school days…It didn’t work out for me…plus, my P.E teacher at that time was a complete asshole. He past me of course, but he never taught anyone how to swim.
You have a chance here to learn to swim…so, make all of us proud and do it. 🙂

I’m in my early 20s and I think I’m on a slow start with my life now. But thanks for sharing this it makes me motivated to accomplish my goals (I wanna go back to uni again someday) 🙂
P.S. I’m with you on the Duolingo app – finishing the daily tasks is a big achievement to me too ^^ But lately I haven’t gone back to doing it (even the daily reminder gave up on me haha). Maybe I should do it again!
Sorry if it’s a long comment. About the swimming thing, I remember our first swimming class back in college when our professor asked us to reach the other end of the pool (with whatever means possible) during the period- a lot of us didn’t know how to swim so we had to walk and stop in the middle, or swim like a dog. But I think what kept us going is seeing everybody doing the same thing and laughing at ourselves the same time. Maybe you can start off by doing a lap, anyway you can always rest in the middle 🙂 the important thing is to keep going to the other end (I’m saying this more to myself). Anyway, thanks!

Haha thank you for you lovely comment! What language are you learning on Duolingo?! I’ve been trying to learn Italian for a while now! This summer I did a lot of jumping in my parents’ pool so I’m at least getting use to the water now – one step at a time, or stroke in this case haha 🙂 thanks for the advice and the encouragement! I really appreciate it 🙂

You’re welcome! 🙂 I’m learning Spanish (because it’s a little close to my native language). I tried a little of Italian too but it was so foreign to me I gave up after the first lesson hehe! Good luck to us ^_^/ I think I might have to start all over though because I forgot the past lessons already -____-
That’s great haha! Now that I think about it, I think I registered for that swimming class just to have free access of the pool. I’m sure your parents are having a great time watching you too 🙂

When you follow your dreams, the universe takes care of you. When you deny them for any reason, you become a burden to those around you. This is ancient Haudenosaunee thinking. You know the tribe as Iroquois probably.

I love that! Yes, I did learn about the Iroquois in school – thanks for sharing, I’m taking note of that in my journal – it’s a great reminder.
